About the Region

In 2012, the New York Times put this island on its cover: "The Island Where People Forget to Die." Sitting in the middle of the Aegean, across from Izmir, the small Greek island of Ikaria is a place where a third of the population lives past 90, and dementia cases are almost nonexistent.

Researchers believe geographic isolation — modernity arriving late — may be one of the factors that protected Ikaria. Clock time barely matters here; instead, there's a rhythm known as "island time," and it stands squarely against chronic stress.

Nutrition Secrets

  • Wild Greens (Horta): Over 150 species of wild plants foraged from the mountains make it to the table. Their polyphenol and antioxidant density is far higher than cultivated vegetables.
  • Olive Oil: An average of 6 tablespoons a day. Monounsaturated fats make it one of the most powerful foods for heart health.
  • Herbal Teas: Wild mountain oregano, sage, marjoram and thyme are brewed daily. Many of these herbs contain natural diuretics and blood thinners — researchers link them to Ikaria's low rate of high blood pressure.
  • Black-Eyed Peas and Legumes: A source of protein and fiber at nearly every meal.
  • Greek Coffee: Rich in polyphenols; studies link 1–2 cups a day to cardiovascular protection.
  • Orthodox Fasts: The Orthodox calendar sets roughly 150 days a year without meat, dairy or fat — naturally producing the same effect that modern intermittent-eating research predicts.

Sleep, Naps and Island Time

A midday nap is a cultural norm in Ikaria — employers turn a blind eye when workers head home in the afternoon. Studies on Greek populations show regular nappers have a 37% lower risk of heart disease.

  • Island Time: Clocks don't carry much weight here. People wake up late, stay up late, and nap in the afternoon. This rhythm keeps cortisol levels in check.
  • Social Life Late Into the Night: Dinners start late and can run until midnight. Neighbors are truly neighbors — social isolation doesn't exist.
  • Gardening and Walking: The mountainous terrain provides natural exercise. Older residents tend their own gardens.

"I met a 97-year-old man in Ikaria who'd just been diagnosed with cancer. 'I don't have time to worry,' he said. 'Today I have my garden, tomorrow my friends are coming.' Ikaria taught me this: to live long, you have to forget the clock."
