About the Region
Loma Linda is a small California city about 100 km east of Los Angeles. The Seventh-day Adventist community there (roughly 9,000 people) lives 10 years longer than the US average. This American Blue Zone is remarkable precisely because it proves this gap can be created through lifestyle choices alone — in a modern country, in an ordinary town.
The Adventist Health Study, launched in 1958 and still running today, is one of the most comprehensive long-term studies of the link between diet and longevity. Its findings have produced dozens of papers in the world medical literature.

Diet: Plant-Based and Deliberate
Vegetarian / Vegan Diet: The vast majority of Adventists don't eat meat. Vegan Adventists have a much lower BMI and far fewer cases of diabetes and cancer than other groups.
Nuts: The Adventist Health Study's most striking finding: people who eat a handful of nuts five days a week cut their heart attack risk by about 50%. This finding changed nutrition guidelines worldwide.
Drinking Water: A habit of drinking 5–6 glasses of water a day. Choosing water over other beverages has an outsized effect on cardiovascular health.
Whole Grains: Oats, barley, buckwheat and brown rice instead of refined flour.
Zero Alcohol, Zero Smoking: Forbidden by faith. Removing just these two factors alone creates a major health advantage.
Simple, Early Meals: Dinner is kept light, and eating late is avoided. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.
Sabbath, Faith and Community
The Sabbath — a full weekly day of rest running from Friday sundown to Saturday sundown. For these 24 hours, work, shopping and screens are set aside; family, nature and faith come first. Researchers suggest the Sabbath is one of the most effective weekly stress-reset mechanisms there is.
Volunteering: The Adventist community treats volunteering as a matter of faith. Studies show regular volunteers live longer and experience less depression.
Strong Identity: Shared values, language and practices bind the community tightly. Stress, uncertainty and loneliness are lower in this environment.
Nature Walks: Nature holds a sacred place in Adventist belief. Many members spend their weekends in the mountains and parks.
"Loma Linda taught me this: religious faith gives people a social framework that protects them from risky habits. But the real power is in being able to stop for 24 hours every week — to disconnect and truly rest."
